Dhaka, April 18, 2025 — In a significant step towards improving diplomatic ties, Bangladesh and Pakistan held their first high-level discussions in more than 15 years. The meeting, held in Dhaka on Thursday, marks a critical moment in efforts to restart a long-dormant dialogue between the two nations..
The talks were led by Md. Jashim Uddin, Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, and Amna Baloch, Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary. The two officials shared a handshake and took a photograph at the Padma State Guest House, signaling the beginning of renewed communication after a long period of estrangement.
A key issue raised by Bangladesh was its demand for a formal apology from Pakistan for the tragic events of the 1971 Liberation War. Uddin pointed out that unresolved issues, like the return of stranded Pakistanis, were also discussed in the meeting.
Additionally, Bangladesh pressed Pakistan to settle its $200 million debt, which was initially pledged as foreign aid for the victims of a devastating 1970 cyclone in what was then East Pakistan.
This meeting took place at a time when relations between the two countries are showing signs of thawing, especially after the departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, which paved the way for a shift in the regional political landscape.
Beyond addressing historical grievances, Bangladesh also sought to build stronger economic ties with Pakistan. Uddin emphasized the need to improve market access for Bangladeshi goods in Pakistan, urging both countries to simplify trade rules, remove tariff barriers, and promote Pakistani investment in Bangladesh’s economy.
This diplomatic effort indicates a genuine attempt by both nations to move past old conflicts while focusing on potential opportunities for mutual growth and collaboration.
