February 17, London: The 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) were held at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday, honoring the best of world cinema in a dazzling celebration. This year, the evening saw a dual victory for Conclave and The Brutalist, with each film winning four prestigious awards.
Conclave, a theological drama directed by German filmmaker Edward Berger, dominated the ceremony by securing both Best Film and Best British Film, marking a rare achievement, as it is the first film to win both top honors since 1917 in 2019.
Similarly, The Brutalist, an immigration war film directed by Brady Corbet, also bagged four awards, including Best Director for Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody, who portrayed Holocaust survivor László Tóth. The film further cemented its success by clinching awards for Best Original Score and Best Cinematography.
Meanwhile, All We Imagine as Light by Payal Kapadia, a Cannes-winning film, was once again outperformed by the French musical Emilia Pérez, which took home the award for Best Film Not in the English Language. This marks the third time this year that Kapadia’s film has lost to the French musical, after Emilia Pérez won the Best Foreign Language Film award at both the 82nd Golden Globe Awards and the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards earlier this year.
