Azerbaijan is marking a day of mourning after the passenger plane crashed off the coast of the Caspian Sea. Authorities are investigating the emergency landing of the passenger plane that killed at least 38 people on Wednesday morning. The plane crashed about 3 km (1.8 miles) away from Aktau. The city lies on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. The location was on the route from Azerbaijan’s capital Bau to Grozny.
According to officials, the passengers present in the plane were 42 Azerbaijani citizens, 16 Russian citizens, 6 Kazakh citizens, and 3 Kyrgyz citizens among these there are 32 survivors. The survivors include 2 children who are now under medical examination with others in critical condition. Many were saved by pulling them out of the plane wreck while some pulled themselves out covered in blood. The deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan announced the death of 38 people in the plane wreckage.
The reason for the crash was reportedly due to an “emergency” on Board. The vehicle had to take an alternate route due to heavy fog in Grozny, its intended destination and make an emergency landing. Commercial aviation tracking sites tracked the plane on its scheduled route until it disappeared and later reappeared in East Coat before crashing. The plane requested for an emergency landing on an alternative airport due to heavy fog in Grozny. Unfortunately, the nearest Russian airport, Makhachkala, was closed earlier the day becseu of drone activities. The main reason for the crash still remains unclear.
