January 9, Armenia: Armenia vouches for a bill to bid to join in the EU. On Thursday the Armernian government gave approval to a bill that called for the country, which was once part of the Soviet Union, to launch a bid to join the European Union.
In the recent years Armenia has deepened ties with the west, despite having close relations with Moscow, and once being a part of the Soviet Union. the Parliament started out with the statement, “the beginning of the accession process of the Republic of Armenia to the European Union”. Brussels initially did not respond to a request for comment.
The former members of the Soviet Union, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have joined the bloc, a years-long negotiating process requiring harmonisation with EU legislation, among other things. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan underlined the cabinet on Thursday that the public should not expect a rapid accession, and that it might require the approval from another referendum. Though Armenia’s relations with the EU are good yet, joining will not be easy.
