Eastern Afghanistan has been struck by two powerful aftershocks within 12 hours on Friday, intensifying the crisis caused by a series of recent earthquakes. According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), these aftershocks have heightened fears of further death and destruction in the already devastated region.
Earlier this week, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan, resulting in over 2,200 fatalities and thousands injured. The devastation has left tens of thousands homeless, struggling to survive in the difficult mountainous terrain under harsh weather conditions.
Rescue efforts face significant obstacles due to cultural restrictions that prevent many women trapped under the rubble from being directly assisted by male rescuers. Despite these challenges, aid workers continue emergency relief operations to support the affected population.
The United Nations has urgently called for increased funding to:
- Support the construction of safer housing
- Enhance disaster preparedness
- Mitigate the impact of future earthquakes
The region remains tense and vulnerable as survivors await further aid while fearing additional seismic activity. The death toll is expected to rise as recovery efforts proceed under these difficult conditions, underscoring the urgent humanitarian needs in Afghanistan.
