On Tuesday, Indonesia commended Brazil for completing the recruitment process into BRICS which complements Indonesia’s aim at being part of developing economies that act as a counterbalance to the West. This was reported by the Brazilian foreign ministry. On Monday it also noted that Indonesia like other BRICS members was also keen on reforming the global governance structure and strengthening networking in the South.

The approval of Indonesia was granted within the framework of the 2023 Brics summit in Johannesburg, and this country thanked Russia, which in 2024 will preside over the Brics, for assisting it in its application. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia observed that it considers the admission to the BRICS together with other countries the reflect Indonesia’s interest in promoting a more active participation in global decision-making processes and to pursue a fairer and inclusive global governance system.

The BRICS bloc was established in 2009 with the participation of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, and the expansion followed in 2010 with the inclusion of South Africa. In 2023, it grew with the addition of Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE. From Indonesia’s perspective, being part of the group is a major reason for better relations with other developing countries based on equal partnership, mutual respect, and sustainable development.

Brazil, which holds the BRICS presidency in 2025, aims to focus on enhancing collaboration among Global South countries and reforming multilateral institutions. One of its key initiatives includes the improvement of alternative payment systems to facilitate trade among member states. The next BRICS summit will happen in Rio de Janeiro in July 2025.
