December 31, Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe Abolishes Death Penalty Law. On 1st December the President of the state Emmerson Mnangagwa approved the bill that terminated the death penalty with immediate effect.

Amnesty, which is a rights group in the country has raised concerns over this issue and formally stated, “Beacon of hope for the abolitionist movement in the region” and also said that the death penalty could cause multiple regrets during the state emergency.

This issue arose after the last when hanging was carried out as an execution, but their law hung up or gave out death sentences to heinous crimes like murder. According to Amnesty about 60 people were on death row in 2023, They will be re-sentenced by the courts and the judges will sentence them according to their crimes.

Justice Minister Ziyambi states that the abolishment of the death penalty was more than a social reform. The death sentence was introduced to the law by the British Colonial Rule but it has been now abolished.

Globally, 113 countries have abolished the death penalty right now one of them being Zimbabwe.
