Kenya has taken a significant step toward enhancing its renewable energy infrastructure by signing an agreement to develop the Siruai Wind and Storage project. Situated south of Nairobi near the Kipeto wind farm, this initiative will introduce 100 MW of wind-generated electricity complemented by a 50 MWh battery energy storage system.
The project, with an investment exceeding €200 million and spearheaded by Meridiam along with the Kenyan government, is designed to tackle the common issue of renewable energy intermittency. By integrating wind power and battery storage, the system will:
- Optimize electricity generation
- Stabilize Kenya’s power grid
- Reduce energy outages and voltage fluctuations
The battery storage system plays a critical role by storing excess energy generated during periods of high wind production and releasing it when generation is low. This functionality ensures a more reliable power supply across the country.
This ambitious project will:
- Double Meridiam’s wind generation capacity in Kenya
- Mark a milestone in building a sustainable and resilient energy future
- Support Kenya’s vision to expand clean energy sources and improve energy security
- Promote economic growth while advancing environmental objectives
