Dubai has granted permits to three Chinese companies to test driverless cars on select roads within the city. This initiative marks a significant step toward advancing autonomous vehicle technology in the UAE.
The permits were announced during a demonstration that featured a trial ride of Baidu’s Apollo Go RT6, the company’s sixth-generation self-driving taxi. This exclusive test ride was offered to select media organizations, including Khaleej Times, providing a firsthand experience of the innovative technology.
This initiative aligns with Dubai’s vision to integrate smart transportation solutions and enhance road safety through automation. Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) worked closely with the involved companies to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and compatibility with the city’s infrastructure.
The program supports Dubai’s smart city goals while positioning the city as a hub for innovation and futuristic mobility solutions. The deployment of these autonomous vehicles on public roads follows extensive trials conducted within controlled environments.
Authorities plan to:
- Closely monitor the performance and safety of the driverless cars.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety standards before wider implementation.
- Benefit both residents and visitors by providing safer, more efficient means of transportation.
Dubai’s move to incorporate driverless cars is expected to enhance road safety and bolster the city’s reputation as a leader in smart city and transportation innovation.
