Estonia has reported a significant breach of its airspace by three Russian fighter jets. The jets, identified as MiG-31s, entered Estonian airspace without permission and stayed there for 12 minutes. This unprovoked incursion took place over the Gulf of Finland, escalating tensions on NATO’s eastern border.
The Estonian foreign minister has condemned this act as a “brazen intrusion” and summoned a Russian diplomat to lodge a strong protest. NATO scrambled aircraft in response, demonstrating its readiness to defend member states’ sovereignty. The European Union also criticized the violation, stating it further escalates tensions in the region.
The incident has drawn widespread international attention amid already strained relations between Russia and NATO countries. Estonia, a NATO member, views this as a serious threat to its national security and a test of NATO’s ability to respond to aggression.
Moscow’s actions come amid other heightened geopolitical conflicts in Eastern Europe and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Experts fear that such incursions could lead to unintended conflict if not managed carefully.
