Kathmandu, Nepal – Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday following widespread anti-corruption protests led by Nepal’s youth. The demonstrations erupted after the government imposed a ban on popular social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube. The ban was seen by protesters as an attempt to silence growing online dissent against corruption and nepotism.
The protests turned violent as thousands of young demonstrators defied a government-imposed curfew, clashing with police forces. The unrest resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people and numerous injuries. Protesters also set fire to the homes of prominent political leaders, including the Prime Minister’s residence.
The movement, driven largely by Gen Z activists, called for broader political reform and mass resignations, reflecting deep frustration with persistent corruption and lack of job opportunities in the country. Kathmandu’s streets were scenes of chaotic protests with government buildings torched and officials attacked.
Mr. Oli’s resignation has left uncertainty about Nepal’s political future as the country grapples with demands for systemic change. Observers note parallels with recent protests in neighboring countries driven by young populations seeking justice and transparency.
