At the 17th BRICS Summit held in Brazil, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a strong message condemning terrorism. During the ‘Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance’ session, he described terrorism as a “grave threat to humanity.” Modi expressed sympathy for the victims of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and emphasized the necessity of global solidarity against such violent acts.
In his address, Modi also criticized Pakistan for its alleged support of terrorism and pointed out the inadequate representation of two-thirds of humanity in global institutions established in the 20th century. These institutions, he noted, require reform to better reflect the interests of the developing world.
The summit saw leaders from major emerging economies gather to discuss a range of critical international issues, including:
- Trade tariffs
- Tensions in the Middle East
Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend the summit. Despite their absence, the BRICS bloc collectively condemned recent strikes on Iran, stressing the urgent need to break the cycle of violence and restore peace.
Modi urged the international community to go beyond superficial gestures and pursue substantial reforms aimed at benefiting developing nations. The BRICS summit in Brazil continues to serve as a key platform for addressing:
- Global security challenges
- Promotion of developing countries’ interests in global governance
