In a significant victory against banditry, troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have successfully dismantled a notorious bandit camp in Taraba State. The operation, conducted on February 2, 2025, in Angwan Bala, Kambari area of Karim Lamido Local Government Area, led to the neutralization of one bandit and the surrender of 23 others, including 19 males and 4 females.
Acting on credible intelligence regarding the movement of suspected bandits, the troops launched a fighting patrol to the identified hideout. Upon arrival, the bandits opened fire, prompting an immediate and overwhelming response from the soldiers. A comprehensive search of the camp resulted in the recovery of a significant cache of arms and ammunition, including four AK-47 rifles, five AK-47 rifle magazines, 80 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, an English-made pistol, two locally made guns, 28 cutlasses, 16 motorcycles, and 48 daggers and jack knives.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the bandits, originally from Plateau State, had paid a local chief in Amar village ₦1.5 million to acquire and establish their camp in the area. The Commander of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops for their bravery and reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to the security and stability of Taraba State and its environs.
In a related development, on January 27, 2025, troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, operating under Operation Golden Peace, intercepted rustled livestock and arrested three suspected cattle rustlers in Taraba State. The suspects—Sabiu Lawal, Haruna Ayuba, and Yusuf Mukawo, all from Kampanin Zurak, Plateau State—were apprehended at Namnai village in Gassol Local Government Area. They were found in possession of 174 cows and 57 sheep, allegedly stolen from border villages between Plateau and Taraba States. Investigations suggest that the livestock were being smuggled towards Cameroon via Karamati in Gashaka Local Government Area.
The army, in collaboration with local stakeholders, is working to trace the rightful owners and ensure the return of the stolen animals. The 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security across Taraba State and urged the public to provide credible intelligence to aid in combating criminal activities.
