This marked Xi’s first public commentary following the recent U.S.-China agreement to reduce mutual tariffs for 90 days, aiming to de-escalate ongoing trade tensions. Additionally, China introduced a visa-free travel policy for five unspecified countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, signaling stronger diplomatic and economic ties under the Belt and Road Initiative.
The summit also saw participation from leaders like Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is seeking to deepen economic ties with China amid global instability. Lula’s visit coincides with those of Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Chilean President Gabriel Boric, reflecting a broader shift among Latin American countries toward stronger partnerships beyond the U.S.
