May 6, 2025 Moscow: In a major escalation of fighting, Ukraine conducted an overnight drone strike on Moscow for the second night in a row, leading to the temporary shutdown of all four major Moscow airports. Russian officials said at least 19 Ukrainian drones were shot down and destroyed before they could reach the city, with debris falling on major highways, but no one was harmed.
The drone attack caused the suspension of flights at Moscow’s largest airports—Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky—for a few hours. Rosaviatsia, Russia’s aviation agency, confirmed the closures and reopenings, stating the steps were taken in the interest of passenger safety.
Outside of Moscow, other areas in Russia, such as Voronezh and Penza, also witnessed drone intrusions late last night. The governors from these areas explained that their air defense systems had effectively intercepted several drones without any reported casualties or notable damage.
There has not been an official statement from Ukraine regarding the drone attacks. Nevertheless, the attack occurs at a time of ongoing tensions and earlier Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory.
In response, Russia also launched its drone attacks throughout Ukraine. In Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine, a Russian drone strike hurt a minimum of 47 individuals, two of whom were children. The attack resulted in fires and extensive damage to residential apartments.
Similarly, in the Odesa oblast, a Russian drone attack left one dead and caused damage to infrastructure in the area. The regional governor, Oleh Kiper, stated that there were multiple homes damaged, and there were fires documented due to the attack.
These incidents represent a significant escalation in the utilization of drone warfare between Ukraine and Russia, with both using unmanned aerial vehicles to attack strategic targets. The retaliatory attacks point to the climbing level of the conflict and the possibility of increased escalation, as well as civilian casualties.
As the situation unfolds, the world is closely watching, calling on both sides to be restrained and try to resolve issues diplomatically to avoid more loss of life and destruction of infrastructure. Keep reading Questiqa.com for more news.
