Chilean authorities issued a tsunami warning for the country’s southernmost region on Friday morning after a major 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit the Drake Passage, the water between South America and Antarctica.
Chile’s emergency agency, SENAPRED, asked people to evacuate the coastline of the Magallanes Region due to the tsunami threat.President Gabriel Boric also ordered evacuations along the coast of the region.
The earthquake, measuring 7.4 on the US Geological Survey (USGS) scale, hit at a depth of 10 kilometers, approximately 219 kilometers from the Argentine city of Ushuaia and the Chilean town of Puerto Williams. The quake hit at 9:58 am local time, and several smaller aftershocks were detected.
The Magallanes region is Chile’s second-largest but underpopulated territory, situated close to Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego Province.
In Argentina, the earthquake was largely registered in Ushuaia without reports of injury or damage.
