April 28, 2025 | Palm Beach, Florida:
Former President Donald Trump, on April 27, 2025, declared his intention to reinstate Columbus Day as an independent federal holiday,
But not coincide with Indigenous Peoples Day. He criticizes Democrats for, in his opinion, trying to downplay Christopher Columbus’s legacy and the importance of the holiday, which he termed as “bringing Columbus Day back from the ashes.
“I’m bringing Columbus Day back from the ashes. The Democrats did everything possible to destroy Christopher Columbus, his reputation, and all of the Italians that love him so much,” Trump mentioned.
“They knocked down his Statues, and erected nothing but ‘WOKE,’ or worse, nothing! Well, you’ll be pleased to know, Christopher is going to have a huge comeback. I am restoring Columbus Day under the same rules, dates, and places as it has had for all of the many decades past!” he concluded.
While President Joe Biden declared Indigenous Peoples Day to occur on the same day as Columbus Day starting in 2021, these did not alter the official designation of Columbus Day as a federal holiday.
The discussion on Columbus Day is still active, with some professionals arguing that it should either be replaced or celebrated in conjunction with celebrating Indigenous peoples.
They have proposed the celebration as an acknowledgment of the scarred history inflicted on the Indigenous peoples of America. Many states and cities have already adopted a celebration known as Indigenous Peoples Day, either instead of or in conjunction with Columbus Day, reflecting the rethinking of the narrative in America.
