Negros Island, Philippines, April 9: A powerful eruption from Mount Kanlaon on Tuesday morning sent a massive column of ash soaring into the sky, triggering fresh alerts for residents and schools in the surrounding areas.
The eruption occurred at 5:51 a.m. local time (22:51 GMT on Monday), with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirming that the ash plume reached an altitude of approximately 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) above the volcano’s summit. The ash cloud drifted southwest, potentially affecting nearby communities.
The volcanic activity lasted for nearly an hour, finally subsiding around 6:47 a.m., according to official reports. Videos circulating on social media captured the dramatic scene, thick, grey ash billowing into the sky as local residents watched in shock and concern.
Authorities noted that some evacuation measures had already been implemented following an earlier eruption in December, which helped reduce the number of people at immediate risk during this latest event.
While no casualties have been reported, Phivolcs is closely monitoring the situation and has reiterated warnings to stay away from the four-kilometre permanent danger zone around the volcano. Residents are advised to remain alert for further advisories as volcanic activity may continue.
Mount Kanlaon is one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines and has a history of explosive eruptions. The government has urged nearby schools and communities to take precautionary measures and be prepared for possible disruptions in the coming days.
