27 February, Santa Fe, NM:
Legendary Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and their dog were found dead in their New Mexico home, authorities confirmed on Thursday. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office stated that foul play is not suspected, but an investigation is ongoing.
Deputies conducted a welfare check at Hackman’s residence around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, where they discovered the 95-year-old actor, his 63-year-old wife, and their pet deceased. Officials have not yet disclosed the exact cause of their deaths.
Hackman, known for his versatility and commanding on-screen presence, was widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation. His prolific career spanned several decades, from the 1960s until his retirement in the early 2000s. He won two Academy Awards—Best Actor for The French Connection (1972) and Best Supporting Actor for Unforgiven (1992) and received five Oscar nominations throughout his career.

The news of Hackman’s passing comes just four days before the 2025 Academy Awards ceremony. His contribution to cinema, portraying villains, heroes, and complex antiheroes, remains unparalleled in Hollywood history.
Hackman and Arakawa, a classically trained pianist from Hawaii, met in the mid-1980s while she was working part-time at a California gym. The couple later moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they lived a quiet life away from the spotlight.
