Kampala, Uganda – February 25, 2025
Ugandan police are investigating the death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who allegedly fell from a third-floor balcony at Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala. The 29-year-old striker for Vipers Sports Club was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead.
Lawal had reportedly visited his Tanzanian friend, Omary Naima, and was left preparing tea in her room before the incident. His sudden death has raised concerns, with conflicting reports initially suggesting he died in a motorcycle accident.
Tributes have poured in for Lawal, fondly known as the “Man from Sokoto.” Vipers SC, where he had played since 2022, mourned his passing, describing him as a generous and kind-hearted person. His former club, Nasarawa United, and Ugandan footballer Mustafa Kizza also expressed their condolences.
Nigerian footballer Ahmed Musa called for a thorough investigation, emphasizing that Lawal’s soul “deserves justice.” Uganda’s police confirmed that they are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting interrogations. They have retrieved Lawal’s belongings, including two smartphones, shoes, and a training kit, as part of the probe.
Authorities have promised further updates as investigations continue into the circumstances of his tragic death.
