Feb 24, Peru : A tragic incident at the Real Plaza Trujillo shopping mall in northwestern Peru has left six people dead and at least 78 others injured after the food court’s heavy iron roof collapsed on Friday night. The disaster occurred in the city of Trujillo, located in the La Libertad region, where dozens of people were gathered at the time of the collapse.
Defense Minister Walter Astudillo confirmed the casualties during a news conference on Saturday. According to reports from local firefighters, five individuals died at the scene, while a sixth succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. Astudillo also provided an update on the injured, stating that 30 people have been discharged, while 48 remain hospitalized, with three in critical condition. The minister expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims.
Luis Roncal, head of the local fire department, reported that rescue teams, aided by search dogs, found no signs of life in the rubble. However, efforts to search for survivors will continue as a precaution.
In response to the tragedy, Trujillo Mayor Mario Reyna announced the immediate closure of the shopping center, citing “imminent risk.” He also emphasized the need to inspect other shopping centers in the area to ensure public safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
