Pope Francis Hospitalized Amid Worsening Respiratory Infection

Pope Francis, 88, has been admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for additional treatment as he battles a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract, the Vatican announced Monday. The pontiff, suffering from bronchitis since early February, was hospitalized on Friday for diagnostic tests and treatment.

Initially, the Vatican reported that Francis’ condition was stable, with his fever subsiding over the weekend. However, follow-up medical tests revealed a more complex infection involving multiple pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and possibly fungi. Such infections can be particularly concerning for elderly individuals, especially those with preexisting lung conditions.

Francis has a long medical history of respiratory issues. In his youth, he had part of one lung removed due to a severe infection, which has occasionally caused breathing difficulties throughout his life. Given his age and medical background, doctors determined that hospitalization was necessary for closer monitoring and targeted treatment.

As a result of his condition, the Pope’s general audience scheduled for this week has been canceled. Despite his illness, Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni reassured the public that Francis remains in good spirits and continues to stay engaged in pastoral duties.

One of his ongoing concerns has been the war-torn region of Gaza. Throughout the weekend, the Pope continued checking in on the Catholic Church in Gaza. According to Rev. Gabriel Romanelli of the Holy Family Church in Gaza City, Francis called on Friday and Saturday and even sent a text message on Sunday.

“We heard his voice. It is true, he is more tired. He said, ‘I have to take care of myself.’ But you could hear the clear voice, he listened to us well,” Romanelli told Vatican News.

This latest health scare has raised concerns about the Pope’s ability to fulfill his demanding schedule. While Francis has often dismissed worries about his health, saying he is willing to serve for as long as God allows, his increasing frailty has fueled speculation about a possible papal succession in the future.
