Washington, D.C., February 8, 2025 – US President Donald Trump signed an executive order freezing financial aid to South Africa, citing concerns related to its new land law as well as its legal case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
Trump criticized allegations against the South African government, stating that its land expropriation policy, which allows for land seizures under certain conditions, is a blatant violation of property rights. Moreover, Trump lambasted South Africa’s portrayal of Israel in the international court, where the country accused Israel of genocide, terming it an “aggressive position” against the US and allied nations.
The White House confirmed that in addition to halting aid, it will develop a resettlement plan for South African farmers, particularly Afrikaners, under the US Refugee Admissions Program.
Billionaire Elon Musk, born in South Africa, supported Trump’s stance, questioning the country’s land laws. Meanwhile, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa defended his government’s policy, stating it aims to ensure fair land access without illegal confiscation.
Ramaphosa reportedly spoke with Musk to address concerns and reaffirm South Africa’s commitment to justice and equality. However, Trump maintains that South Africa’s leadership is engaging in “horrible things” and has vowed to keep the aid freeze in place until a full investigation is conducted.
