Jan 16 Thursday, 2025 Brasilia: The former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro’s defense has filed a request late on Thursday with Brazil’s highest court to reconsider the decision to bar him from traveling to the United States to attend the U.S. Inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
Earlier on Thursday, Brazil’s Supreme Court denied the former President’s request to temporarily restore his passport for him to attend the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on January 20, 2025. The court was led by Justice Alexandre de Maraes, who ruled that he did not adequately prove he had been invited to the inauguration. and added that he remains a flight risk due to an ongoing investigation of his alleged involvement in an attempted coup. This was after his electoral defeat in 2022. Bolsonaro who has been barred from running for office till 2030 had his passport retained in February 2024 on the order of Brazil’s top court.
In the court’s decision on Thursday, Justice Alexandre de Maraes wrote that Bolsonaro said in a November 2024 interview that he “considered the possibility of escaping and requesting political asylum to avoid possible criminal liability in Brazil.”
Bolsonaro had requested permission to travel from January 17 to 22 to attend the inauguration ceremony and a Hispanic inaugural ball. He denies the allegations against him and has accused Brazil’s judicial system of political persecution. He said in an interview with a local news outlet, “Those who see themselves as persecuted can go to an embassy.” Keep Reading Questiqa.com & Questiqa.in more more updates.
