Special Counsel David Weiss released his final report Monday, detailing years of tax evasion by Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son. The report concludes Hunter Biden intentionally avoided paying $1.4 million in taxes on over $7 million in income between 2016 and 2020, earning substantial sums through business ventures tied to his “last name and connections.”
Weiss’s investigation revealed that Hunter Biden secured lucrative roles, including a board seat at Ukraine’s Burisma Holdings and partnerships with a Chinese energy conglomerate. Despite his income, Weiss found that Hunter Biden “spent millions on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills.”
Hunter Biden, 54, faced multiple legal battles last year. He pleaded guilty in September to three felony tax charges and six misdemeanor offenses after initially denying the allegations. In June, he was convicted in Delaware on firearm charges linked to his previous drug use. Weiss dismissed claims that Hunter Biden’s history of addiction, outlined in his 2021 memoir Beautiful Things, excused his financial misconduct. “His failure to pay taxes in 2018 came eight months after achieving sobriety,” Weiss wrote.
Weiss highlighted Hunter Biden’s deliberate acts of deception, including filing false returns and claiming personal expenses as business deductions. These actions, Weiss noted, were “not technical violations” but serious crimes warranting prosecution.
Though Hunter Biden faced up to 17 years in prison, his sentencing set for December 16 was rendered moot after President Biden issued a blanket pardon earlier that month. The pardon covered a decade of potential federal offenses, sparking sharp criticism from Weiss.
In his report, Weiss took issue with President Biden’s dismissal of the charges as “selective” and “unfair,” asserting that such comments undermined public trust in the justice system. “Politicians who attack career prosecutors’ decisions as politically motivated erode confidence in our criminal justice system,” Weiss wrote.
The report closes a years-long investigation into Hunter Biden’s finances and reignites debates about political influence, legal accountability, and public trust in the justice system.
