A young man was killed in a violent stabbing attack in Wyndham Vale, Melbourne, just two years after his older brother was shot to death outside their family home.
Lino Atem, 24, died after being set upon by a group armed with knives late Friday night at a reserve on Haines Drive. Two other men, both 27, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospitals.
Police confirmed four men, aged between 24 and 28, who were with Atem, were arrested nearby. However, the attackers remain at large.
“There’s no doubt whoever was wielding the blow has had some clear intent to seriously damage and probably kill him,” a detective stated.
Atem’s death marks a heartbreaking second tragedy for the South Sudanese family. His older brother, Atem Atem, was fatally shot in February 2023 after a large group confronted him outside their home. The family’s dog was also shot during that attack.
The family, who moved to Australia in 2003, has lived in the Wyndham Vale home since 2007. Investigators are examining potential connections between the two attacks. While it’s unclear if gang activity played a role, police acknowledge there is often a deeper story behind such violent incidents.
Opposition leader Brad Battin, speaking in nearby Werribee, described the stabbing as “a tragedy” and expressed condolences.
“Our thoughts today are with the family… It doesn’t matter where we are on the political spectrum, our voice is with you,” Battin said.
The fatal stabbing occurred near a primary school, shocking the quiet residential area. Homicide detectives have established a crime scene and urge anyone with information to contact police.
