14 May Greece: At around 1:51 a.m. local time on Wednesday morning, a 6.1 earthquake hit near Fry, Greece, as per the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake was at a depth of 78 kilometers and caused tremors in the Eastern Mediterranean region, including Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan.
The quake, though fairly deep, was extensively felt, prompting thousands of real-time reports that were submitted to Volcano Discovery, a site that tracks earthquakes. Several residents of the region reported being awakened by creaking beds, shaking furniture, and swaying objects.
“My bed shook and vibrated on the third floor of the hotel Infinity Blue in Hersonissos, close to the beach. I initially thought it was the air conditioner. It awakened me around 1:56 AM,” a tourist in Greece said.
In Cairo, one resident stated, “The couch was shaking from side to side, water bottles fell over, and lights moved. But it didn’t seem dangerous as a whole.”
Yet another witness from Giza, Egypt, described a lively scene: “We woke up as if we were on a rolling cradle. Our bamboo tree shook hard. Even after the shaking had passed, mugs in the house kitchen were clattering against the wall.”
A resident from Rhodes, Greece, reported: “I thought it was my boyfriend shaking the bed—until I felt we both shaking. It lasted more than 30 seconds.”
Although there has been extensive tremor, as of now there have been no reported injuries or significant structural collapse. Governments of affected nations are keeping a close eye on developments, but a tsunami warning is yet to be issued.
