Beijing, Jan. 30 – A 5.2-magnitude earthquake shook Taiwan’s Chiayi County at 10:11 a.m. Thursday (Beijing Time), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The earthquake’s epicenter was located at 23.25 degrees north latitude and 120.57 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers. The tremor was felt across Chiayi and neighboring regions, causing momentary panic among residents.
Local authorities have not reported any casualties or major damage so far, but officials are closely monitoring the situation. Emergency response teams have been dispatched to assess potential risks and assist affected communities.
Taiwan, situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location near complex tectonic plate boundaries. The island has stringent building codes to mitigate earthquake-related damage, though powerful tremors in the past have led to significant destruction.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines in case of aftershocks. Authorities continue to assess the impact of the earthquake and provide necessary updates.
More information will be released as the situation develops.
