Kathmandu, Nepal – Nepali Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday following intense young anti-corruption protests that shook the nation. The protests erupted after the government imposed a ban on popular social media platforms, sparking outrage among Gen Z protesters. The situation escalated violently when demonstrators defied a strict curfew and clashed with police, resulting in the deaths of 19 people.
The movement reflected deeper frustrations over widespread corruption and nepotism, commonly referred to as ‘Nepo Kids’, which have fueled youth anger for years. Protesters not only demanded Oli’s resignation but also called for mass resignations within the government, highlighting their desire for broader political change.
Amid the unrest, several ministers resigned, and protesters set fire to the homes of political leaders, including former Prime Minister’s residences. The government subsequently lifted the social media ban in response to the demonstrations.
The protests have drawn global attention, showing the power of youth activism in Nepal. Kathmandu’s streets saw fierce confrontations as residents pushed back against policies they view as oppressive.
With Oli stepping down, political uncertainty remains, and all eyes are now on how Nepal’s future leadership will address the grievances of its younger generation.
